Starting in 2011, the DFL (German Bundesliga) and its 100 per cent daughter company Sportcast is to produce one fixture per Bundesliga Matchday in 3D. The matches will be offered to all of the DFL's TV and IPTV partners.
As a leading innovator in the field of football broadcasting it's our duty to explore new methods," said Tom Bender, DFL member of the board, "We've been working for a few years on 3D technology and now the time has come to implement it in the Bundesliga, especially as our partners are extremely interested in the service."
Sportcast, a daughter company of the DFL, provides the signal for all 612 Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga matches and is already in a position to deliver games in 3D. As well as special 3D cameras, new forms or directing and camera concepts are required to accommodate the new technology. Many more cameras will be used in the production of 3D matches than the current maximum of 14.
